how would your morale system work?? i saw it on your survey and i never thought about an army wide and unit by unit morale system and it sounds cool but how would you use it?

Thanks!

Hi Domonic,

I'm glad you've asked - the morale system is something we are quite happy with.

First off, thanks for answering our survey, it's much appreciated. Now, the morale. Morale is the term for the army-wide system, and it will be affected by the loss of friendly units throughout the army, as well as the loss of enemy units in the enemy army. The unit-by-unit system is called Courage, and is basically the same - it is affected by losses of friendly models in the unit and enemy models in the enemy unit (if the unit is engaged in close-combat).

The more units your team loses, the worse the affects are. Your army's morale decreases, and your units' courage statistics become tested. If the enemy team are losing more units than your own, then your units will get certain buffs, like extra courage or more attacks etc., to represent your soldiers losing their defensive stance and realising they are now able to just run the enemy down as the battle draws to a close.

If your army morale is weak, and a unit loses a combat, they will most certainly route. This means they start to flee uncontrollably from your lines, and when they reach the edge of the game area, they are removed from the game, as casualties. We want to make Fog of War a more realistic game, and in real warfare (take it from Theogar - he's seen lots of it!) many of the losses are due to soldiers routing, not dying. This means that if you had 10 units, and your enemy had 10 units, and somewhere in the game you have lost 8 units and they've only lost 5, your remaining units will be very concerned with the circumstances of the battle, and will be taking courage tests. These courage tests will be made worse by the reduction in the units' courage (due to the damaged army morale), and by the end, some units that never even saw combat will still be wanting to flee, as they know the day is lost, and they're hopelessly outmatched.

Hope this helps!

oh okay so the courage system is basically affected by the morale system?? and what about if units get shot? you say that when a unit is in closecombat with another unit then it has a chance of running if it loses models, what about if a unit is shot by archers or something, does that affect the defending units courage too?

thanks!

Yes, each unit's courage is strengthened or weakened by the state of the army morale, as well as their circumstances in the battle. If a combat in won, they gain courage, and if a combat is lost, they lose courage.

Also, shooting affects units by suppressing them, which slows them down. However, some units (like charging cavalry and large units) cannot be suppressed. The courage system works by the amount of models lost in relation to the size of the unit. If a unit of 20 men lost 11 men in a single round (be it from close-combat or shooting attacks) then that means it has lost 55% of its unit in a single round, and this means the unit would have to take ac courage test, and the test would be weakened because of the severity of the situation. Because of this, units that are targeted by shooting attacks have their courage tested in the same way that units would do in close-combat.

Referring to the percentage of a unit lost (this works in models, NOT wounds) there are a list of certain boundaries and how these affect the unit's courage. E.g., if a unit loses 25% of its models or more, 50% or more or 75% or more, then there are different effects that are put on the unit, getting worse the more of the unit is lost.
